On November 4, 2025, the closing ceremony of the 14th China Art Festival was held in Chongqing. The award list for the 18th Wen Hua Awards was officially announced at the closing ceremony. PR Lighting provided lighting support for multiple outstanding entries. Among them, Guangzhou's original dance drama "Awakening Lion" and the Sichuan Opera "Dreaming of Su Dongpo" along with 13 other productions, stood out from 428 entries nationwide to win the Wen Hua Play Award.
The China Art Festival is a national comprehensive culture and art gala, and the Wen Hua Award is the highest governmental award for professional stage art presented by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the People's Republic of China. The dance drama "Awakening Lion" is the first production to have reached the final evaluation of the Wen Hua Awards twice. It stood out from 428 entries nationwide and ultimately received honors. It is also one of the three productions at this China Art Festival that won the Chinese Dance Lotus Award for dance drama.
So far the dance drama "Awakening Lion" has successively won the 11th Chinese Dance "Lotus Award" for Dance Drama, the "Outstanding Play" award at the 13th National Dance Exhibition, was shortlisted for the 16th Wen Hua Awards nomination, received funding from the 2019 National Art Fund for Large-Scale Stage Play Creation, and received rolling funding for large-scale stage plays and works in 2020.
Since its creation in 2015, the dance drama "Awakening Lion" has been refined over ten years and grown into a true "evergreen on the stage."
"Awakening Lion" has substantial content, incorporating not only ingenious artistic treatment in areas such as stage design and lighting technology but also highlighting the inheritance and innovation of intangible cultural heritage elements. It cleverly integrates traditional Lingnan elements such as Southern Fist, wooden fish song, lion drum, and Yingge. Through the staged presentation of skills like "Picking the Green" and "Tying the Lion Head," as well as innovative dance vocabulary like the "Tea Drinking Finger-Tapping Dance" and "Bench Dance," it achieves a perfect blend of "dance" and "martial arts."
"Dreaming of Su Dongpo" uses dreams as a clue and adopts a non-linear narrative structure, cleverly tracing important life nodes of Su Dongpo, such as his enlightenment in Huangzhou, building the Snow Hall, composing the magnificent "Ode to the Red Cliff," building bridges in Huizhou, and educating the people in Danzhou, along with the deeply moving love story between him and Wang Runzhi. Utilizing the artistic expression of Sichuan Opera, along with stage lighting design, and through detailed plot development and character portrayal, it vividly presents the legendary life of the cultural giant Su Dongpo while also shaping a version of Mr. Dongpo full of life's vibrancy and distinct Sichuan flavor.
